He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.” –Epictetus
It seems that “the holidays” invariably bring a stream of thoughtful sayings and wisdom appropriate to the season. Gratuitous? Some of it. So, what resonates in this December of 2025? I think it is the same as it ever was: it is better to give than to receive.
The holidays—whatever you celebrate, tend to bring out some pretty selfish behaviors. Among the kids especially. We live in a materialistic culture of “I want” when plenty of people around the world barely get what “they need”. It’s not just kids (which importantly includes throngs of ungrateful teens) but all of us in varying degrees. “What do you want for Christmas?” my wife asks. Actually, not much. At 68 years old, the things I want don’t fit under the tree, or in an old stocking. I’d like a cool car, but hey, that’s not a realistic suggestion. More Patagonia gear? A nice shirt? A watch? The newest iPhone? I can do without all of it. No one likes a Grinch, but enough is enough.
It's time to reflect on all the good things we already have. Our cozy home(s). Our adoring dogs and cats. Our deep friendships. Our loving family. Our good health. My mother is turning 100 this year, and I have plenty to thank her for, since she has given me 68% of her life. And I do not need another LL Bean flannel shirt, (no offense).
Practicing gratitude pays a rich dividend. Be thankful each and every day—especially around these holidays.
"Always have an attitude of gratitude."
